Athens Clarke-County police made official this morning what friends and family of local musician Jon Guthrie have feared since news of a single-car accident was reported last night along Guthrie's projected route after leaving downtown early Sunday morning.
From the ACCPD media release: Officers responded to a one vehicle accident on Beaverdam Rd near Weatherly Woods Dr around 1850 September 28. A 1994 Mercedes Benz was east bound on Beaverdam when the driver, JON GRAHAM GUTHRIE of Hardin Dr, apparently lost control, crossed the center line, and left the roadway. The vehicle went down a ditch, went airborne, stuck an embankment, overturned, and came to rest on the roof in a creek. GUTHRIE was deceased. The investigation continues. (09-2201)
Guthrie was last seen leaving downtown Athens around 1 o'clock Sunday morning, headed outside of town towards a friend's house. He was officially reported missing sometime thereafter when friends and family became concerned over a lack of contact and absence from work. The wreck was discovered towards dusk on Monday.
Guthrie was a member of the Michael Guthrie band, of which his father was the name sake. A still-budding local musician, he was 26 years old.
