Artist of the Day: The Felice Brothers
When I first heard The Felice Brothers, I went straight to my computer and double checked the members to see if Bob Dylan had taken a new direction and joined a band. The simplicity and rawness The Brothers bring to their music draws an uncanny comparison to their influential predecessor.
In the beginning, the band played in the subways of New York City. Upon gaining momentum, the members have put festivals such as Bonnaroo, All Points West and Langerado under their belts.
The band consists of brothers, Ian Felice and James Felice, an ex- traveling dice player turned professional bassist named Christmas Clapton, David Tubeville on drums, and a fiddler/ washboard player that goes by the name Farley.
In 2006, The Brothers released their debut album Through These Reins and Gone and in 2007 signed a recording contract with Loose Music in Europe. Their first release was one of Radio Woodstock’s top 25 albums of 2006. The following year the members signed a new deal with Team Love Records and toured the country in their “short bus” ( a 1987 special education bus) to promote their album.
The Felice Brothers don’t disappoint and have become a fan favorite. It’s been reported the electricity went out due to thunderstorms at the 2008 Newport Folk Festival and the band continued playing acoustic while barefoot, winning over their audience and displaying the heart of The Felice Brothers.
Made out of an old chicken coop, the band’s own studio became the location for inspiration when writing songs for the band’s latest album. Yonder Is The Clock (Team Love Records) is an ode to American authors of the past and a tribute to the journey the band has traveled so far.
The Felice Brothers are currently pleasing crowds and headed to 40 Watt on September 29th.
