Artist of the Day: Eric Church
Eric Church probably looks like a guy you met in college who always kept a pen in his hand and guitar on his back. And, for the most part, he is that guy. Church writes and sings about what he knows and prides himself on the honesty his brings to his music.
A North Carolina boy, Church got tired of seeing bands pack bars and tip jars playing songs he felt he could play just as well, and so after graduating college, he headed to Nashville. Church got his first break as a songwriter for Terri Clark’s song, “The World Needs A Drink” after signing a publishing contract with Sony Tree. He was then introduced to producer Jay Joyce and began cutting demos. Soon after, Church was offered a record deal with Capitol Records and the rest, I guess you could say, is history.
Sinners Like Me was released in 2006 and rendered three Top 20 country hits: “How ‘Bout You”, “Two Pink Lines” (a song about nervously awaiting the results of a pregnancy test) and “Guys Like Me”. Church’s second album, Carolina, was released in March and the album’s first single, “Love Your Love the Most” is holding steady on the US Singles Top 100.
Church’s ability to resonate with fans is filling venues across the country, and as part of his Young & Wild(er) tour, he is playing to a sold out 40 Watt crowd Friday night on the eve of an anticipated first home football game.
He’s developed a large following from his live shows,( and the man is constantly touring) because people in the audience feel like he’s singing about their life. And, even if you’re not a country music fan, it’s easy to respect Church’s song-writing ability ( he’s a damn good writer if I do say so myself) and the authenticity he brings to his shows.
