Courtney Love, Guitar Hero 5 Dispute
Courtney Love, widow of Nirvana frontman Curt Kobain and sometimes rockstar herself, is up in arms about her late husband's character in the new Guitar Hero 5 video game. The game, released on September 1, features a Kobain avatar that players can use while performing songs.
Among the many other comments on Love's Twitter account, she wrote, "this is NECROPHILIC this is VILE" and "i think Kurt would despise this game alone let alone this avatar." Clearly Love is not happy.
But Activision, the company behind Guitar Hero 5, claims that Love approved the Cobain avatar and is now engaged in a he said/she said dispute. A dispute in which the whacked-out Love airs her grievances in the form of misspelled tweets. This is going to be ugly.
Activision released this statement today: "Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain’s likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero 5.”
Someone's not telling the truth here (but given Love's sterling reputation, it's not hard to guess who's lying). Either Love approved the use of Cobain's likeness for the game or she didn't. Regardless, Love has threatened to sue Activision in several comments made on Twitter and to the press.
