Source: Bulldog 100.1 FM to shut down, re-format

Photobucket

Athens mainstay "The Bulldog" radio (100.1 FM) will undergo a music philosophy overhaul, according to a source close to the situation, though it does not appear parent company COX Communications has sold the station.

The changeover will be completed Friday morning, but there was no official word on what the new format/programming will be.

As of 8:40 p.m. Wed, the station was broadcasting wildly out of philosophy music and breaking up each song with the promotional identification "Athens new home for Obama Government Controlled Radio."

Calls to multiple numbers at the station went unanswered.

More details to come......

  2. I really hope this is the Bulldog's attempt at humor if not not...so sad :(

  3. How can a corporate radio station think such an overtly political stunt is a good idea?

  4. I liked this station, but I won't listen to it after the change over. If I wanted blow hard political non-sense, I would listen to talk radio.

  5. The Bulldog was fine and wish it was left alone. I turned on the radio this morning to listen to Kris & Evan and got this. I think they should kill the talk radio format at 103.7 and put music back on that frequency. Cox Radio just made a huge mistake (unless this is a stupid prank)!!!

  6. Ever notice that the right-wing talk-radio government-bashers never question the broadcast frequency allocation policies of the Federal Communications Commission?

  7. I can say that they just lost a listener in me. Joke or not, I didn't appreciate the Obama antics that they pulled this AM and I personally know a few business owners who are planning to pull ad dollars due to the change over (I mean really..........your great plan is to move Kris Harris to Magic 102 afternoon programming????) and the "Obama Controlled Government Radio" crap that is being played over the next 24 hours. Bad move COX - you guys should know your demographic better before you make such a horrible decision. Good luck Kris and Evan. You guys are the real victims.

  8. I totally agree with most comments. I was shocked this morning and had to check my radio three times trying to figure out why this lame music was coming out of my 100.1 music station that my radio is tuned to. If I wanted to listen to that lame music I'd listen to Magic 102. I hope it is a stunt, although not a funny one at all. I miss Chris and Evan and hopefully will return tomorrow. If not, that's why we have satellite radio now. The one I have at work can easily be placed in my car also. As they say, suits at radio stations nowadays, have no clue what listeners want.

  9. i heard the "obama controlled" crap yesterday evening. (look at the time: 4:00 yesterday afternoon to noon today. right at 6 they started this thing, and i for one thought it was in pretty poor taste.

Whether or not it was a Cox stunt or a stunt by the local crew, or maybe they learned about a planned changeover and this was their response, either way, i always thought the Bulldog sucked pretty hard, but this took the cake.

  10. Athens now has a new Power Hits Station!!!!!! Just what we wanted...according to some dipweed consultant.

I hope Cox loses major advertising dollars over the format change and never recovers a profit from the 100.1 frequency.

I listened to the Bulldog because it was different from every other format and had the best D.J.'s, Kris and Evan. There is no other station with the same format in the area and Cox is foolish to give up that unserved demographics in a vain attempt to beat out other existing power hits stations in the area.

  12. This seems all too real and the new station is BAD. I listened for an hour this evening in hopes to hear something worth listening to but the "powerhouse" failed, hard. Wherever Kris and Evan went, I wish them the best of luck and if it is true one of them moved to 102.9, I'll just have to suck it up and listen there for awhile, just to hear a familiar voice, at least until I can afford satellite radio to get my rock fix. Bad form, Cox radio, Bad form.

  13. The 'new' format sucks. If they stay with the type of music they played on Oct .1 - R.I. P. 100.1.

  14. The Obama controlled radio schtick was hilarious. I wasn't sure what the point of view, but still funny is funny. With this post, at least I now have some backstory on it. It's probably a bit of satire on takeover by corporate radio-types to sell a crappy product. I'll miss the guys.

  15. I can say the new format SUX!! Not to mention no morning show with Kris Harris. The people at Cox are complete idiots. This is Athens, we don't wanna listen to new pop like Kanye West. Bring back the Bulldog!

  16. I totally agree with most of the comments, the new format just sucks. I listened to the station for the music they played and Kris and Evan, they were very funny and kept it real all the time. The entire Obama controlled crap yesterday was just too much, I had to change the station. It amazes me that these big corporations make such bad choices, the show was unique and that was what kept listeners, now it just sucks like most of the other stations out there. If their plan it to make all the listeners they had to leave I think that are well on the way. Cox you and you decision makers suck, goodby from a loyal listener.

  17. New format sux and my presets will be changed. I loved The Bulldog. Yesterday I thought that maybe some "radio signals" were getting crossed when obama was playing so I turned it then I found this out this morning-so sad!! gonna miss the morning show

  18. Initially, I thought my car radio had freaked out and forgotten its assignments.

I wish that really were the case.

  19. I thought the "Obama media" tag was a one-off joke -- now it's just annoying -- and I agree that the format change is a disappointment. I looked at the website for Cox Radio >> Station Locator >> Station Operations, and I think Athens was switched to their "urban" format. Rah. It may not do any good, but here is the link to their contact information in ATL: http://coxradio.com/contact/. Maybe they'll switch back to the old format if they receive enough complaints????

  20. The Bulldog should go back to the old frequency at 103.7. That's what most of the college students here in Athens grew up with. Damn the talk radio, there is plenty of that around here on AM, and damn the urban station, we have 95.5 for that.

  21. Anyone who is in town for the game today, was there still a "Fire Up the Dawgs" tent set up at Papa John's on Baxter St. before the UGA game? I know the Bulldog's sister stations also did Fired up the Dawgs, but curious to know if they still let Kris & Evan do something at Papa John's? It would seem odd that Cox Radio would pull this promo during the middle of the season...

  22. well i guess the only rock station now is 96.1
