Artist of the Day: Atlas Sound

Photobucket

Athens born, Atlanta bred Bradford Cox is Atlas Sound. In fact, he's been using the moniker since he started recording himself on a tape player in the sixth grade. Atlas Sound Cox's side project from his main gig, Atlanta based quintet Deerhunter.  With his solo effort, Cox focuses more on his vocals and meandering pop sounds than the music of the punk influenced Deerhunter. Cox has explained hisdesire to do a solo project because it gives him the chance to work on "ideas that [he] can’t make work with a five piece rock band."

Atlas Sound's second full-length album, Logos, was just released yesterday, although many fans got a chance to hear its tracks months ago.  This was not due to an outsider leak or an attempt at a Radiohead-inspired egalitarian approach to music downloading, but rather a big slip up on Cox's part. Back in 2008, he accidentally posted a link on Deerhunter's blog, allowing the public to access song demos both from Logos and from Deerhunter's Weird Era Cont. Oops.

Cox nearly abandoned the new album after this fiasco, but, luckily for us, he decided to continue on and finalize the early tracks, turning them into the experimental ambient tunes of Logos. The album's first single, "Walkabout," is a psychedelic surf pop duet with Panda Bear. You can listen to that track here.

Atlas Sound is currently touring the U.S., but there are so far no dates for the Southeast.
