Mars Volta...mellowing with age?
On June 23rd the Mars Volta will release their 5th studio album titled Octahedron, with the first single being “Since We’ve Been Wrong” (sorry, no release for that announced yet.) The album was written by guitarist Omar Rodriguez and vocalist Cedric Bixler Zavala, as on their previous releases. Fans can likely get a sneak preview at Bonnaroo June 11-14 (the schedule hasn’t been announced yet). There is also a summer tour in the works, though no dates have been announced for that either. Bixler-Zavala told an Australian radio station called Triple J that the record is “more mellow” and “a little more of what we consider out ‘acoustic’ side.” To avoid any confusion (or add some, depending on how hard you want to think about this) Zavala says, “It’s our version of what we consider an acoustic album.” The new album taps into a handful of previous collaborators, including former tour mate John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Chili Peppers also had a dial-down with 2002’s By The Way. Fans will see if the Mars Volta explores a similar route this summer.
