One Hit Wonders!

Photobucket

So yesterday's Marcy Playground post really got me thinking about some of the most killer one-hit wonders of the last few decades. What am I leaving out? Let me know...

Deep Blue Something - "Breakfast at Tiffany's"

Ask 15 people who sang this song, and 14 of them will draw a blank. Ask 15 people to sing this song, and everyone will likely nail it on the first try.

Survivor - "Eye of the Tiger"
As long as there are sports spoof movies, this song will always remain legendary.

The Georgia Satellites - "Keep Your Hands to Yourself"
The Satellites actually had a pretty high-charting song right after this one, but then....well, there's always classic rock radio.

Sneaker Pimps - "Six Underground"
A lot of people forget this tune when lumping categories like this together, and I don't know why, because people sure as hell forgot about the band after 1996's Becoming X, which featured this song.

The Verve - "Bittersweet Symphony"
Everyone goes through a phase with this song. If you're in it, don't worry...these things do pass.

The Buggles - "Video Killed the Radio Star"
Everyone knows this song to be the genesis of MTV, airing as the network's first music video on August 1, 1981. But most people forget this song was a UK #1 almost two years before, putting the Buggles in a unique situation of being a two-hit wonder from the same song, two years apart.

Blind Melon - "No Rain"
Really, this one is unfair. If Shannon Hoon hadn't died, BM would have had a lot more (and the album this song comes from kicks ass in it's entirety). Nonetheless, it qualifies.

Gerry Rafferty - "Baker Street"
If you can sing 9 words of this song, I envy you (actually, that's a lie. I feel sorry for you). But everyone - EVERYONE - knows the sax hook.

Ugly Kid Joe - "Everything About You"
Everything about this band was pretty much a parody - the name is a ploy off "Pretty Boy Floyd" (a famous gangster and subject of the legendary Woody Guthrie tune) and the album title (America's Least Wanted) is a play off Ice Cube's AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted - apparently, the humor wore off quickly.

Spandau Ballet - "True"
Sort of like Boyz II Men and Lonestar in the '90s, this is the ultimate last-dance-at-prom or first-dance-at-your-wedding song from the '80s.

Vanilla Ica - "Ice Ice Baby"
Here's your proof: sometime's one hit song is one too many.
