What do cars, engagement rings and a long weekend of jamming out have in common? Layaway. In an attempt to encourage ticket sales in a slumping economy, many large-scale summer festivals are offering payment plans where fans can pay off their ticket in installments. Perhaps after promoters saw Langerado bite the dust, they decided that they could not depend on trustafarians alone. Enter: payment plans. Coachella offered this option for the first time in their 10-year run, and they expect a good turn-out, of about 50,000 people, for next weekend. Similarly, Bonnaroo, Allgood, Rothbury and 10,000 Lakes have introduced layaway as a ticketing option. Having their bank account take the hit gradually may be drawing in fans who might otherwise forego their festival dreams. For example, if you get your Bonnaroo ticket now, you will pay $190 upfront, including all fees, and then another $50 on May 5, followed by a final $50 on May 19. Three easy steps and you’re on your way to Springsteen, Phish, and co.
