Breaking: Former Wilco member found dead Sunday

Jay Bennett

Jay Bennett, part of the creative brain-trust that helped spring Wilco to the fame they now enjoy, died in his sleep early Sunday morning.

Though Bennett has been known of late for his well-publicized feuds (and messy lawsuit) with front-man Jeff Tweedy, his creative contributions to the band's rise are undeniable. Bennett first joined the group touring behind Wilco's debut record, A.M., and lent an invaluable production and multi-instrumental hand to Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, both of which have become flagship records for the band.
Tweedy, on tour with the band in Spain, released the following statement: "We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will miss Jay as we remember him -- as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band's songs and evolution. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this very difficult time.
A cause of death is not yet known. Bennett was 45.
