Live show review: The Incredible Sandwich
Athens’ own up and coming band, The Incredible Sandwich, performed at Tasty World Friday night to a lively crowd. The Sandwich has been together for just over a year and has been rapidly gaining attention and fans ever since the release of their debut EP in April. And after last night, I now know why. The Sandwich is made up of a group of four very talented musicians, each seemingly to have their own style and musical influences. Matt Mckinney, lead guitar and vocals, stole the show for me though. His incredibly talented guitar playing and thoughtful lyrics got the show going and kept it going all night. That’s not to say that Damian Kapcala (on Hammond B3 and moog synthesizer), Kevin Juneau (bass) and the quirky Rackley Davis (drums) didn’t do their parts to keep the energy up, though. The foursome collaborated incredibly well for a band that has only been together for a year. The band’s Phish influence is immediately obvious (one audience member was even yelling out Phish song requests mid-concert), but there is also a bit of Latin and rock mixed in. The improvisational jams throughout the concert impressed me in the members’ ability to play their instruments while also always listening to and playing with their band mates instead of on top of them. The Sandwich’s combination of energy and intelligence at their show seemed to keep the crowd entertained and has definitely made a fan out of me.
