Artist of the Day: The Pixies
The Pixies took the stage at the Isle of Wight festival two days ago on June 14, their first gig since their 2004 reunion tour and a handful of festival gigs in 2007. Since their formation in 1986, the Pixies have been a huge influence on many musicians, including Kurt Cobain. Their unique combination of punk and surf rock has been described as “abrasive,” largely due to Francis’s vocal delivery. Songs like “Gigantic” and “Where Is My Mind” have found listeners who weren’t even in grade school when the band split in 1993. All of the Pixies’ studio records were released yesterday, June 15, in Limited Edition and Deluxe Edition box sets titled Minotaur. The Deluxe Edition box set contains a total of five albums plus a DVD for the band’s 1991 Brixton Academy gig, and also includes all of their videos. (The Limited has all five albums on 180 gram vinyl). They announced a 2009 tour on their blog, but dates have yet to be announced.
