SPIN magazine is not taking the 25th anniversary of Prince’s Purple Rain record lightly. And that’s an understatement. To celebrate the anniversary, SPIN has produced a 10-page comprehensive oral history of both the film and album along with a downloadable tribute with nine different bands covering the record’s most famous tracks. The nine-song tribute has been named Purplish Rain (novel, I know), and SPIN will be giving it away for free, although a clue from the magazine’s June issue will be necessary to get the download. One gem included in the album is Apollonia, who co-starred with Prince in the movie, covering “When Doves Cry” with Greg Dulli and the Twilight Singers (available at SPIN.com right now). Also on the album is Of Montreal covering “Computer Blue,” Lavender Diamond singing “Purple Rain,” and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings’ singing “Take Me With You.” The nine bands included in the project recorded their songs for free and mastered the songs themselves. SPIN did a full court press to get Prince involved in the album and covered all of the royalty expenses. “It was a fun challenge,” Dulli told SPIN. “I can guarantee you that what we do sounds nothing like what you expect. The only thing you’ll recognize is the lyrics.”
