Theater investigation to begin Monday

The investigation of the Georgia Theater fire will begin tomorrow (Monday) morning, officials said. They are still waiting for the Theater to be cool enough and safe enough to enter.

"We're just keeping an eye on it until the hot spots cool down and the investigation begins," Athens-Clarke Director of Emergency Management Chuck Gulley told the Athens-Banner Herald.

Police have secured the area surrounding the theater and will remain at the entrances to prevent anyone from trying to enter until Monday morning, at which point they will hand it back over to Wilmot Greene, the owner. Parts of both North Lumpkin and West Clayton will remain closed for the next couple of days, officials said.

People came to peer into the open doors of the theater Saturday afternoon, only to see charred remains and an entirely gutted interior. Some fans handed out fliers to advertise the Perpetual Groove benefit concert that was played last night.

As the Georgia Theater's website says, "right now, there are more questions than answers," but, hopefully with the investigation starting tomorrow, that will change very soon.
