Artist of the Day: Phoenix
While England is usually where we get our best European imports, French pop-rockers Phoenix are one of the most exciting bands to come across the pond lately. (It probably helps that they sing in English.) Though they formed in grade school, they debuted in 2000 with United, and have since released three albums, the most recent- Wolfgang Armadeus Phoenix- reaching audiences here in the states with catchy tunes like “1901” and “Lisztomania.” The group is gaining a higher profile lately, with appearances on the Late Show With David Letterman and SNL, as well as a recent spot on the Bonnaroo lineup. In the past they have collaborated with electronic acts like Daft Punk and Air, influences you can hear in their music, a combination of rock and dance. Random note: Frontman Thomas Mars has a child with director Sofia Coppola. Another random note: All of their albums are under 40 minutes long.
