Incarcerated T.I. Wins BET Hip-Hop Awards

Who says weapons charges and a yearlong servitude in lockup means you don’t deserve recognition for your music? T.I. couldn’t be at the BET Hip-Hop Awards ceremony because he was locked up in the Arkansas penitentiary but that didn’t stop him from taking home the award for best collaboration with Rihanna for the song "Live Your Life" and album of the year for Paper Trail.

Fiancée Tameka "Tiny" Cottle stood in for her man T.I. and accepted the awards on his behalf. She read a few words from T.I. that insisted though he couldn’t be there is person, he was there in spirit. If he keeps gun slinging, this may be more of a harsh reality than a touching metaphor.

Tiny needn’t fear a Kanye West interruption because the rap-star was surprisingly absent from the awards ceremony. With all the bad press lately, West no doubt wanted to avoid any possibility of alcohol getting him drunk and making him do stupid things.

Other notable award take-homes included JayZ for MVP of the year, Drake for rookie of the year, and Ice Cube for the “I Am Hip-Hop” icon award. The BET Hip-Hop Awards will air on October 27th.
