VH1 Divas: A Night of Duet Goodness

Photobucket
VH1 brought Divas back to television yesterday, September 17th, for the first time in five years. The initial advertisements for the show centered on the fresh talent of generation X divas-extraordinaire including Miley Cyrus, Jordin Sparks, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, and Adele. All of these beloved stars on screen together are reason enough to tune into VH1 Divas.

However, the VH1 premiere branched out in its actual selection of “divas” and collected a motley crew of not-so-diva old school talent that took the stage as multiple duet numbers appearing as unintentional “mother/daughter” acts. These old-timers included Martina McBride, Sheryl Crow, and Melissa Ethridge.
My favorite duo by far was Cyrus and Crow. After slightly botching “Party In The U.S.A,” Cyrus redeemed herself by holding her own in the diva-licious chorus of Crow’s “Makes You Happy.” The two golden girls owned the stage and meshed well vocally.

On the other hand, VH1 needs to be careful of trying to over star-stud the stage. In attendance was Stevie Wonder, the Real Housewives, Whitney Port, Lauren Conrad and not to mention the 10+ talented songstresses. It was appropriate for the premiere, but don’t try too hard to make this a hit, VH1.

Lastly, Paula Abdul was a beautiful mess as VH1 Divas host. With American Idol spoofs, a lip-synched performance of her greatest hits and slurred speech galore…Abdul really outdid herself.
