Paula Abdul Not Returning to Idol

After a lot of speculation, and even more twittering, the rumors that Paula Abdul will not returning to American Idol next season have been confirmed… via Twitter. Last night Abdul tweeted that she will no longer be an Idol judge.

“With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to [Idol]. I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon,” Abdul wrote. “What I want to say most is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me. It truly has been breathtaking, especially over the past month. I do without any doubt have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all.”

Abdul’s tweet was confirmed by the producers of American Idol, who stated, “Paula Abdul has been an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show,” the statement said. “While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.” Kara DioGuardi, who just joined the show last year, signed a contract with American Idol for Season Nine last week.

Abdul, while criticized for her weird and loopy behavior on the show, was considered the favorite judge among many of the contestants. Although often talking in unintelligible stream of consciousness sentences, she always had something nice to say (even when it had absolutely nothing to do with music). One thing’s for sure, American Idol will not be the same without her.
