The owner of Georgia Theatre, Wilmot Greene, has posted a letter on the Theatre's official website concerning the situation, process and future of the iconic building. Here is what he posted:
The Situation: The smoke has cleared and now it's time to focus on rebuilding the Georgia Theatre. I hope that you are one of tens of thousands of people who share memories of incredible times inside those hallowed walls (which are still standing). The interior is in rough shape. It is going to take some time to clear out and clean up the building before the rebuilding effort can even begin. We have gotten some incredibly kind offers from contractors, engineers, and architects who are eager to be a part of the team, but the most important part of the team is you, the fan.
The Process: Rebuilding is going to be expensive. "They don't build 'em like they used to" is really true. It's going to take an incredible amount of resources, time, money, and frustration to get her back the way we all remember. This seems so daunting, but it doesn't have to be. There are so many of you out there that want the Georgia Theatre back, and if you all just chip in a little the numbers don't seem so crazy. Really, if you all just donated the price of one ticket we could get back on our feet. We have a 'chipin' widget at www.georgiatheatre.com and we have t-shirts for sale there as well. I don't have any experience at fund raising, I'm not really comfortable asking for money, but you have to play the cards that you are dealt. The sooner we can raise money, the sooner we can go back to doing what we do. Putting on shows!
The Future: I am still confident that out of all this confusion something positive will emerge. Ideally the Georgia Theatre could be rebuilt even better than it was before. I am having dreams of a rooftop patio, environmentally friendly features, better dressing rooms, and all kinds of crazy stuff. However, first things first; namely a roof! This last week has proven to all of us that the Georgia Theatre's place in your collective memories is bigger than we could have imagined. It is a historic venue that needs to go on for a long time to come. We are doing everything possible to ensure that happens.
Cheers,
Wilmot
