Australian-born Silverchair is an alternative rock band inspired by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Black Sabbath, originally formed under the name Innocent Criminals in 1992. The band, consisting of vocalist/guitarist Daniel Johns, bass guitarist Chris Joannou and drummer Ben Gillies, has won a number of awards such as the flagship awards, the ARIA awards (award ceremony put on by the Australian Record Industry Association) 20 times and the APRA awards (reflecting songwriting) six times. Their song “Tomorrow” first won a local music competition in Australia and then soon after they signed with Murmer. In 2003, after the band members released Diorama, they decided to slow things down for a while and recorded with other groups such as The Dissociatives, The Mess Hall and Tambalane. In 2005, Silverchair came up with album Young Modern and found much success. To date, they have sold over six million records total throughout their career. Two years later, the band went on tour with Powderfinger in order to mend the 17-year gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children through the non-profit Reconciliation Australia. The band’s website suggests a new album is in the works but no release date has been set.
