Six Degrees of an Indie Movement

Much like Kevin Bacon has 6 degrees in film; the 6 degrees of Zooey Deschanel can work just as well when referring to indie music.

1. Zooey Deschanel is in a band with M. Ward called She & Him.

2. M. Ward collaborated with Bright Eyes on the tune “Smoke without Fire” from the Four Winds EP.

3. Bright Eyes performed with Ben Kweller on May 26, 2007 at The Town Hall in New York City.

4. The Watson Twins opened for Ben Kweller at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA on March 5, 2009.

5. The Watson Twins Collaborated with Jenny Lewis on her 2006 album Rabbit Fur Coat.

6. Jenny Lewis collaborated with Zooey Deschanel on several tracks from her 2008 album Acid Tongue.

All of these artists create a talented indie rock bubble, one that is on the cusp of breaking new ground in the way we view the “indie” scene.

The reason for showing these 6 degrees of separation is to reveal something else the majority of these artists have in common: Athens. Ben Kweller, Jenny Lewis, M. Ward, Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) and The Watson Twins have either performed in Athens or are scheduled to perform in Athens in the near future. The only artist who has not performed in the Classic City is Zooey Deschanel. She does have a tie to the town though. In 2008, She & Him was chosen as artist of the year in Paste Magazine, a magazine that originated in Athens.

Don’t miss these great summer shows!

Jenny Lewis will be performing at Georgia Theatre on July 1, at 8:00 p.m.
