California has out-hippied the rest of us yet again. While the rest of the nation’s summer festivals have settled for the standard extracurriculars (drum circles, hoola hoops and noodle-fests), California is hosting one festival that is adding a new element into the mix: yoga. The first annual Wanderlust, happening July 24-26 in Lake Tahoe, Calif., is a new kind of festival, combining rock and roll with yoga and the outdoors. Festies can wake up and spend their morning practicing yoga with some of the country’s most renowned yoga instructors, go hiking on one of the many trails that Lake Tahoe holds in the afternoon, and rock out to great music at night. At the heart of Wanderlust is Kula Village, which is sure to be a Mecca for festies. The village hosts vendors and non-profits during the day, and a turns into a veritable saturnalia at night with burlesque, fire-dancing, acrobatics and late night music sets. If that’s not enough to hook you, check out the bill. Michael Franti and Spearhead, Spoon, Jenny Lewis, Broken Social Scene, Mates of State, Andrew Bird, Girl Talk, Gillian Welch and Rogue Wave are just a few that plan to perform at Wanderlust. So, in the words of Wanderlust’s tag line, “feel good, rock out.”
